The ban on the use of mobile phones in schools is emerging as one of the most discussed topics in the prepared changes to the education system. Although there is already a ban on the use of phones during class, the Ministry of Education plans to expand it and formalize it with a law.
"We will offer exceptions – for educational purposes, medical needs or emergency situations. For example, a child whose blood glucose meter is connected to his phone", explained Education Minister Krasimir Valchev in "Crossroads" on NOVA.
The bill is expected to be proposed for public discussion in May and to enter the National Assembly in June.
This means that if the law is adopted, in the next academic year 2025-2026, mobile phones will be completely banned in Bulgarian schools.
"We are convinced that the ban will help students to be more focused and prepare for the next lesson during breaks. Teachers will waste less time collecting phones. There is already enough research that phones have a negative impact and hinder the development of students and the development of key skills such as communication, motor skills, and hinder concentration", Minister Valchev also argued.
Focus on mathematics and sciences
Valchev outlined another main priority – urgent need for reform in the teaching of mathematics and natural sciences. “We have a serious problem in these areas”, he said. An increase in classes, changes in curricula and more support for students and teachers are being prepared.
“The mathematics exam will be the last step – before that we need to prepare students, expand admission to lower secondary schools and attract more young teachers“, the minister said. He stressed that basic mathematical skills will be key in the era of artificial intelligence and technological professions of the future.
