The legendary BNT journalist Daniela Kaneva has died at the age of 87. She blazed new trails at BTA and BNT with iconic reports, interviews and films from world hotspots, the public television reported.

A specialist in Indian and Japanese culture, until recently she was reporting for “Around the World and at Home“. Called D.D.K. by colleagues, relatives and friends, she impressed everyone with her strength of spirit, professionalism and warmth.

She was one of the most significant and respected journalists in the country, leaving a deep mark on Bulgarian media history.

Daniela Kaneva began her career at BTA and BNT in the 1970s. She was the first Bulgarian correspondent sent to Japan, and the first foreign journalist accredited there. Her reports and films from Asia, especially from Japan and India, were distinguished by depth, emotion and professionalism. In 2011, she received Japan's highest honor — Order of the Rising Sun, gold and silver rays, for her exceptional contribution to strengthening Bulgarian-Japanese relations.

Among her iconic interviews are with Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, USSR Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, musician Ray Charles and others.

In 2020, President Rumen Radev awarded her with the Head of State's Badge of Honor for her significant contribution to Bulgarian journalism.

We will forever remember her as a "samurai of the word", whose voice and view of the world inspired generations of Bulgarian journalists and viewers.
