Pope Francis has recognized the heroic merits of Antonio Gaudí to the Catholic Church, known throughout the world as the director of the construction of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona. The young Antoni Gaudí considered the construction of the Sagrada Familia a "mission entrusted to him by God", and his motto was "serving God through architecture".
Gaudí himself died at the age of 73. Many of the works of the Spanish architect are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Among them are the Sagrada Familia, Casa Vicens, Palau Güell, the Güell wine cellars, the chapel and crypt of Colonia Güell, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà.
