Young men from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria are the people who most often illegally try to cross the border of our country. The main research period is from 2012 to 2021.
This is according to the conclusions of a research report on trends and prevention of illegal crossing and smuggling across the border, as well as illegal assistance to foreigners to reside and cross the country in violation of the law, bTV specifies.
Those convicted of this type of crime are mainly men - 90.68%. The largest age group is from 18 to 29 years old - 61.71%, and a total of 87.04% of all convicted are up to 39 years old. Most of them - 64.85%, have primary or lower education. They are mostly citizens of three countries - Afghanistan (26.46%), Iraq (20.14%) and Syria (14.14%), or a total of 60.74%.

Most of them were convicted of illegal border crossing - 85.15%. A large part of those who illegally crossed the border are refugees from war zones or other armed conflicts. Some of them are also fleeing persecution based on political or religious views.
The demographic characteristics indicate that these are more likely to be economic migrants, whose main goal is to settle with their accompanying relatives in developed European countries, and then to bring the rest of their family members with them.
The convicted smugglers and helpers for the period are 8.48% of all. They are also mostly men (85.03%) aged between 30 and 49 (55.16%), married (35.79%), with primary or lower education (55.50%). They are mostly Bulgarian (42.83%) and Turkish citizens (27.58%).
Only 3.39% are convicted of assisting illegal migrants within the country, most often involving transporting or providing shelter to foreigners. Most often these are men (96.78%) aged between 30 and 49 (55.06%), single (65.69%) with secondary education (52.05%), mostly Bulgarians – 94.59%.
According to the analysis, Bulgaria's geographical location in the Southeastern part of Europe and as part of the Balkan Peninsula defines it as the most direct route between the countries of Western and Central Europe, the Middle East and Asia. After our accession to the European Union, our country is responsible for protecting 1228 km of the EU's external borders, according to the experts' conclusion.
