Law enforcement does not believe that the car crash into a crowd in the city of Mannheim (state of Baden-Württemberg) in southwestern Germany was politically motivated. This was stated in a joint statement by the prosecutor's office and the police in Mannheim.
“On Monday afternoon at around 12:15 p.m., a 40-year-old suspect drove his car into a group of people in the Planken district of downtown Mannheim. Two people were killed and five were seriously injured. Five others suffered minor injuries,“ the statement said. It states that all the injured have been taken to hospitals.
"As part of the quickly launched search activities, the police were able to detain a 40-year-old German suspect from the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. At this stage of the investigation, there are no suspicions of political motives“, law enforcement authorities emphasized.
