Former drummer for heavy metal band Judas Priest Les Binks has died at the age of 73, reports Societyofrock.com.
Binks was a member of the band from 1977 to 1979. During his time with the band, he played on two great studio albums: “Stained Class” and “Killing Machine” both released in 1978. He also participated in “Unleashed In The East” - a hugely successful live album from 1979.
The current members of Judas Priest expressed their grief and respect in a public statement.
“We are deeply We are saddened by the passing of Les and send our love to his family, friends and fans. His performances were first-rate – he demonstrated his unique techniques, flair, style and precision. Thank you, Les. Your recognition will continue…..”
In 2022, Binks and other key members of Judas Priest - Rob Halford, Ian Hill, Glenn Tipton, Scott Travis, C. K. Downing and Dave Holland - were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The event marked Binks' last public appearance with his former bandmates.
Binks left the band in 1979. due to disagreements with the band's manager during the making of “Unleashed In The East.”
"I just didn't see the point in continuing to work with a band whose manager didn't want me to get paid for this live album. A completely ridiculous scenario. It's a classic heavy metal live album that I believe ended up going platinum and he didn't want me to get paid a dime for it. Crazy motherfucker. But that's what happens when a band lets someone like that run it — they lose members”.
“Unleashed In The East” achieved platinum status in 1989, a decade after Binks left. Dave Holland took over on drums until 1989, after which Scott Travis became Judas Priest's longest-serving drummer. Travis has been with the band for over three decades and has contributed to six studio albums.
Binks's influence on the world of heavy metal remains significant. His unique playing style and contributions to Judas Priest during his short but impactful tenure with the band have left a lasting impression on fans and musicians alike.
