Napoli regained their leading position in Serie A. After Inter's failure earlier today, Antonio Conte's team made the most of it, defeating Torino 2-0 at the "Stadio Diego Armando Maradona" in a match from the 34th round of the Italian football championship. Scott McTominay became the hero for the "sky blues", who improved the 63-year-old record of the legendary Dennis Lowe, BNT reported.
In the standings, the three-time champions of Italy are now alone at the top with 74 points, 3 more than the "nerazzurri", 4 rounds before the end of the season. "The Bulls" are right in the middle of the standings - 10th with 43 points.
The match started brilliantly for Napoli, who took the lead in the seventh minute. The in-form Scott McTominay scored for the third consecutive match, after positioning himself perfectly to intercept a low pass from Andre Frank Zambo Angisa.
Just four minutes later, however, another Scot - Che Adams - came close to equalizing, but failed to hit the ball well from close range.
Subsequently, the pace slowed down, but before the break the "Parthenopeans" managed to double their advantage with another goal from McTominay. The midfielder was again in the right place in the penalty area and capitalized on an assist from Matteo Politano.
He thus broke the record of Dennis Lowe and the aforementioned Adams for the most goals by a Scot in a single season in the Italian top flight. The former and current Torino strikers have scored 10 each, while McTominay now has 11.
The second half did not offer many chances, with the closest thing to scoring coming from substitute Philip Billing, who hit the crossbar after just over an hour.
Antonio Conte, however, was faced with difficult decisions as three of his key players had to be forced off. Zambo Angisa in the 58th minute, Alessandro Bongiorno in the 64th minute and Stanislav Lobotka in the 86th minute had difficulty continuing and were replaced by Billing, Rafa Marin and Billy Gilmour respectively.
In the next 35th round of Serie A, Napoli visits Lecce on May 3, and a day earlier Torino hosts Venice.
In another match at the same time, Atalanta and Lecce failed to score a winner in an extremely controversial match - 1:1. "Wolves" wished the match not to be played this week, due to the death of their physiotherapist Graziano Fiorita, but in the end the leaders insisted on the match being held today.
Both goals came after penalties, with Jesper Karlsson opening the score surprisingly for the guests in the 29th minute, but Matteo Retegi equalized in the 69th minute. "La Dea" continues to occupy third place in Serie A with 65 points, while its current rival continues to fight for survival in 17th position with 27 points. In the next round, Atalanta visits Monza on May 4.
