Israel closes military camp for Palestinian prisoners - 1

Israel is phasing out the use of a military camp to hold Palestinians captured during the war in Gaza, reports Reuters and News.bg. Human rights organizations claim that prisoners were mistreated in these facilities.

State lawyers told the Supreme Court that the prisoners held at the Sde Teiman facility, which was opened after the attack by Hamas. on October 7 in southern Israel, which ignited the Gaza war, will be gradually moved to permanent detention centers.

The transfer of prisoners has begun and most of them will be moved within a few weeks. This will allow the conditions to be improved in the meantime, the lawyers pointed out.

State attorney Aner Hellman, responding to a petition filed by the Israel Civil Rights Association, told the court that 700 prisoners had already been moved to Ofer, a military stronghold in the West Bank. Another 500 are expected to be moved in the coming weeks, with the "Sde Teiman" 200 people will remain, whose future is still undecided.

The Israeli army is investigating the deaths of Palestinians captured during the Gaza war, as well as the Sde Teiman facility.
