Four police officers in the Philippines were arrested in the kidnapping of foreign tourists, in order to receive a ransom, reported the Associated Press, quoted by News.bg.
Two police officers on motorcycles intercepted a car carrying three Chinese and a Malaysian. Two other civilian policemen handcuffed the tourists and dragged them into a van. However, two of the Chinese managed to escape and notified the local authorities.
The other two tourists were released for a ransom of 2.5 million pesos ($43,100). Philippine Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos said the four law enforcement officers were detained. According to him, the incident represents a serious breach of public trust.
Police are looking for at least 10 more suspects who are not police officers but were involved in the kidnapping. Those arrested have been charged with kidnapping, theft and robbery.
