The Georgian National Legion was recognized by the Russian Federation as a terrorist organization, the TASS agency reported, as quoted by News.bg.
Based on the evidence gathered by the FSB, the Southern District Military Court recognized the paramilitary formation "Georgian National Legion" for a terrorist organization.
In accordance with this decision and the federal law "On Combating Terrorism" the formation was included in the Unified Federal List of organizations, including foreign and international, recognized in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation as terrorist. The FSB clarifies that the activities of these organizations are prohibited on the territory of Russia.
The FSB notes that the formation was created in 2014 under the patronage of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and currently the Georgian National Legion is the largest armed formation recruited on a national basis .
Members of the Legion participate in the military actions of the country of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and also participate in the organization of sabotage and terrorist acts on Russian territory. According to the FSB, the recognition of the Legion as a terrorist organization will allow to qualify the criminal activities of its members.
The FSB continues the activity of identifying and countering threats to state security arising from members of the terrorist organization "Georgian National Legion".
The head of the Georgian Legion Ushangi (Mamuka) Mamulashvili, who was prosecuted in absentia in Russia for the recruitment and participation of mercenaries in the country's military actions of the Ukrainian armed forces, was declared wanted by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
