Georgia is ready to restore its relations with the US - 1

Georgia is ready to review its relations with the US, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced on meeting with US Senator Jean Shahin and Congressman Mike Turner in Tbilisi.

„I had an interesting meeting with US Senator Jeanne Shahin and Congressman Mike Turner, where we discussed relations between Georgia and the United States. “I confirmed Georgia's readiness to renew and realign our relations and cooperation to strengthen bilateral ties and promote greater development, prosperity, peace and security in the region and beyond,” Kobakhidze wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Senator Shahin and Congressman Turner arrived in Tbilisi on a working visit the day before. They have already met with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Irakli Chikovani. American lawmakers will also hold talks with representatives of civil society.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on July 31 that Washington has decided to suspend a more than $95 million aid program to Tbilisi due to the passage of Georgia's foreign agent law. Previously, for the same reason, the EU decided to freeze 30 million euros that were planned to be allocated to the Georgian Ministry of Defense.

Relations between Georgia and the United States, as well as the EU, have deteriorated since the Georgian parliament passed a law on foreign agents in May. Earlier, the State Department announced that in connection with the adopted law, it introduced visa sanctions against dozens of Georgian citizens, including members of the government, parliament and their relatives, as well as representatives of law enforcement agencies.
