Israeli army says it is carrying out "precision strikes" on Iranian military targets, after strong explosions went off in Tehran a little earlier, Reuters reported.

"In response to the ongoing months-long attacks by the regime in Iran against the State of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is currently carrying out precision strikes on military targets in Iran,'' the Israeli army said in a statement, DPA added. The text states that Israel has the right and obligation to respond to attacks by Tehran and its proxies, which include missile strikes fired from Iranian territory.

"Our defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized,", the text also reads.

The Israeli military does not strike Iran's nuclear facilities or oil fields, only for military purposes, an Israeli official said, quoted by NBC News.

"Israel carried out strikes targeting military targets in self-defense," the White House said in a statement quoted by Reuters. According to "Fox News" The White House was notified shortly before Israel launched the airstrike against Iran.

A little earlier, Iranian state television reported that several loud explosions were heard around the capital, but made no official comment on the source of the blasts. Explosions also occurred in the area of the nearby town of Karaj.

On October 1, Iran launched a massive air attack on Israel, launching nearly 200 ballistic missiles. It was the second Iranian attack on Israel in the last six months. Israeli officials have vowed to retaliate, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that if the Islamic Republic is attacked, its response "will be more powerful".
