The phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was pointless, as Berlin's position on the Ukrainian crisis has long been known, the next person to call the Russian leader , could be French President Emmanuel Macron.

This was stated by the doctor of political sciences, Prof. Alexander Gusev, to RIA Novosti on the occasion of the telephone conversation between the German chancellor and the Russian leader, held at the initiative of the German side.

"I think this conversation was absolutely pointless in terms of efficiency. Because the Federal Chancellor stated his position, which we heard two years ago. Nothing has changed. What new did he propose? End of the conflict? Shall we sit at the negotiating table?“, Gusev said.
According to him, Scholz called to outline his position on the Ukrainian crisis in connection with the upcoming parliamentary elections in Germany.

„He was starting from his failed position as leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and now needs to win points before the parliamentary elections to improve the political situation.

At the moment, there are no prerequisites for another telephone conversation between a Western leader and a Russian one, but if such an initiative were to appear, it would most likely be French President Emmanuel Macron, Gusev believes.

„Anyone can call, especially Macron, but whoever he is, he will not be able to say or offer anything, because now everyone is looking into the mouth of the winner of the US elections.

„They will do what Trump tells them. If he tells them to call, they will. I do not rule out that Scholz can also fulfill someone else's task, he emphasized.

„Putin could have excused himself with his busyness and diverted his participation in the conversation, but he decided to show that Russia is open,", the expert concluded.
