Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his meeting today at the Vatican with his American counterpart Donald Trump could be historic if the peaceful end to the war between Ukraine and Russia that they have been discussing is achieved, Reuters reported.
"Good meeting. We managed to discuss a lot of things in private. We hope for a result of all the things that were discussed", Zelensky wrote in a post on "Telegram".
According to him, these topics included "protecting the lives of our people. A complete and unconditional ceasefire. A reliable and lasting peace that will prevent the outbreak of war again.
"This was a very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic if we achieve joint results. Thank you, President Donald Trump!", Zelensky added.
US President Donald Trump departed Rome after attending the funeral mass for Pope Francis, Agence France-Presse and Reuters reported.
Before that, he met with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. Then the two also held a meeting with the leaders of France and Britain.
Trump's meeting with Zelensky in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican was their first since their disastrous clash at the White House.
The American president is trying to push his Ukrainian counterpart to conclude a peace treaty with Russia, AFP reminds.
