Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked the territory of the border Russian Bryansk region at night with ATAKMS missiles, and five of them were shot down by "Pantsir" systems. and S-400, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced, quoted by TASS, writes BTA.
The Russian ministry also reported that a sixth missile was damaged.
"This night, at 03:25 Moscow time, the enemy struck an object on the territory of the Bryansk region with six ballistic missiles. According to confirmed data, US-made ATAKMS operational-tactical missiles were used," the ministry said in a statement.
It is reported that the rockets fell on the territory of a military site in the Bryansk region, starting a fire that was extinguished.
"There are no victims and no destruction,", the Ministry of Defense specifies.
Ukraine said it hit a Russian weapons depot about 110 km inside Russian territory and that there were secondary explosions, Reuters reported. However, Kiev did not specify what weapons it used to strike the object on Russian territory.
US President Joe Biden this week authorized Ukraine to use US medium-range missiles to attack Russian territory. Moscow described the move as an escalation that would make Washington a direct participant in the war and that would lead to retaliation.
The authorization was given at a time when the thousand-day anniversary of the start of the war is being marked and when there are doubts about the future of Western aid to Ukraine in view of the return of Donald Trump to the White House.
Military experts say U.S. missiles could help Ukraine defend the territories in the Kursk region it has managed to seize and which it can use as a bargaining chip in possible negotiations with Russia. However, experts are skeptical that the missiles can change the course of the war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin approved today the introduction of changes in Russia's nuclear doctrine.
The new doctrine says that any conventional attack on Russia by a non-nuclear country that has the backing of a nuclear power would be considered a joint attack by both countries. It also states that Russia could make a nuclear response to a massive attack against it with aviation, cruise missiles and drones.
In an address to parliament, Ukrainian parliamentarian Volodymyr Zelensky said that the "decisive moments" of the war will occur next year.
"At this stage of the war, it is decided who will prevail. Will we prevail over the enemy or will the enemy prevail over us, the Ukrainians, . . . and over the Europeans. And over everyone in the world who wants to live freely and not be subjects of a dictator," the Ukrainian leader said.
Thousands of Ukrainian citizens have died, over 6 million have become refugees, and Ukraine's population has shrunk by a quarter since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
