Strong seismic activity continues in Turkey  - 1

The increased seismic activity in Turkey continues today - three tremors were felt in the western district of Kütahya earlier today, and a new earthquake was registered in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul this morning, Turkish media reported.

A new earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 occurred in the waters of the Sea of Marmara off the coast of Büyükçekmece, Istanbul district, at 8:40 this morning, the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) announced. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.8 km.

The region has been a site of increased seismic activity over the past two days, after a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred there on April 23, which, fortunately, did not cause any casualties or serious damage.

Three earthquakes were registered before noon in the Kütahya district of western Turkey - the first two, with magnitudes 4.5 and 3.9, were registered at 07:23 and 07:29, and the third - with magnitude 4.6, occurred at 10:20 local and Bulgarian time.

Meanwhile, several earthquakes were also registered in the Bulgarian Black Sea waters in the Nessebar region, according to data from the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). The strongest of them had a magnitude of 3.5 and occurred at 10:43 a.m.

Turkish seismologists also registered this tremor. The Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) estimated the magnitude of this earthquake at 3.6 on the Richter scale. The tremor occurred 123 km from Kırklareli (Lozengrad) and 183 km from Tekirdag, Turkish media noted.
