French President Emmanuel Macron arrived last night for a visit in Chile, the last stop of his tour in Latin America, reports France Presse, quoted by BTA.
During his tour, Macron defended the position of France, which opposes the conclusion of a free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the regional bloc Mercosur.
The plane of the French president coming from Rio de Janeiro – where Macron took part in the G20 leaders' meeting on Monday and Tuesday landed in the Chilean capital of Santiago. Macron's tour of Latin America began with a visit to Argentina.
Chile, unlike Argentina and Brazil, is not a member of Mercosur. Macron is expected to address the existing trade agreement between the EU and Chile, which he says complies with European environmental standards and takes into account the concerns of French agricultural producers.
Today, Macron will meet with Chilean President Gabriel Borich. France and Chile are expected to sign an agreement to create a Franco-Chilean center dedicated to artificial intelligence, reports AFP, citing a statement from the Chilean presidency.
