The presidential elections in Abkhazia will be held in the first ten days of February. the former president of the republic, Aslan Bzhania, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Bzhania assured that the republican authorities will try to ensure transparency and fairness in the elections.
On Tuesday, the Parliament of Abkhazia accepted the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania. Vice President Badra Gunba will be head of state until early elections are held. Valery Bganba was appointed as the head of the government.
The protests in Sukhum started because of an investment agreement with Russia, which provides for the construction of apartments in Abkhazia. According to the opposition, this could lead to higher housing prices and create risks for small and medium-sized businesses.
Parliament was supposed to ratify the document on November 15, but postponed the meeting due to the outbreak of protests. Opposition supporters seized a complex of government buildings in Sukhum, including the presidential administration, and demanded the resignation of the head of state.
On Tuesday, government and opposition representatives agreed on Bzhania's resignation and an end to anti-government rallies.
