Zakharova: "Negotiations are possible, but Russia's conditions are key - 1

Moscow expressed readiness to consider any "realistic" and "non-politicized" peace initiative to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, but only on the condition that it reflects Russian interests and the current situation on the ground. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, quoted by "Reuters" and News.bg.

Terms of Peaceful Settlement

Zakharova emphasized that the following factors are of key importance for Russia:

  • Russian national interest – any agreement must be consistent with the country's long-term strategy and security.
  • The current situation on the ground – the terms of the ceasefire must reflect the realities of the battlefield.
  • Guarantees to comply with agreements – Russia insists on mechanisms to ensure the implementation of future agreements.

Context and Prior Statements

The Russian side has said it is ready to discuss a ceasefire agreement, including with former US President Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in mediation. However:

  • Moscow categorically rules out significant territorial concessions.
  • Russia insists that Ukraine should abandon its bid for NATO membership, which Moscow sees as a threat to its security.

Perspectives for negotiations

Russia's willingness to negotiate remains limited by its specific demands, which include the preservation of territorial gains in Ukraine and guarantees of Kiev's neutrality. This position makes finding a compromise difficult, especially in the context of strong support for Ukraine from the West.

The Russian leadership expresses a desire for dialogue, but emphasizes that not only the political, but also the country's strategic interests are of key importance. There are serious doubts whether Moscow's proposed terms can be accepted by Ukraine and its allies, casting doubt on the chances of an imminent peace settlement.
