British military intelligence publishes its summary on the state of the conflict in Ukraine and today one of the main conclusions was announced by Defense Secretary John Healy, speaking to the relevant House of Commons committee: the front is now less stable than whenever after the initial stages of the conflict.
Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia was trying to build a modern and capable army trained to conduct complex combined operations, British intelligence wrote. More than 1,000 days later, the Russian ground forces are radically different from that army.
Russian losses in killed and wounded exceed 700 thousand. Most employees received minimal training. In the offensive, Russian commanders use the simplest tactics, although they are associated with heavy losses.
In addition, Russia lost 3,500 tanks and 7,500 armored vehicles. The only way to compensate for these losses remains the large stocks of equipment inherited from the Soviet Union.

But despite the huge costs, Russian territorial advances accelerated in 2024. It relies on the Russian leadership's tolerance of losses and the numerical superiority of Russian ground forces over the Ukrainian armed forces. Under these conditions, "the frontline is now less stable than at any time since the early stages of the conflict," British intelligence wrote.
