Kremlin: Allegations of Russian interference in the Romanian elections are unfounded - 1

Russia does not interfere in elections in any country, including Romania. Any such accusations against Moscow are groundless, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized today in a conversation with journalists, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.

„The Russian side did not interfere in the electoral processes in Romania. We are generally not in the habit of interfering in elections in other countries, in particular in Romania. We have no intention of doing so now. Any accusations in this regard are absolutely groundless, unfounded, and are rather a way to imitate the main trend that exists in the collective West in this regard,” Peskov said, quoted by TASS.

The Supreme Council of National Defense of Romania announced yesterday that in the current context of regional security and especially the electoral situation, "Romania, together with other countries on the Eastern flank of NATO, has become a priority for hostile actions by state and non-state actors, in particular the Russian Federation, with a growing interest on their part in influencing the public agenda in Romanian society".

Far-right independent candidate Calin Giorgescu, who was little known to the Romanian public, surprisingly won the first round of the presidential election on November 24, relying mainly on a campaign by sharing videos on TikTok.

After the announcement of the results of the first round, Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin is monitoring the course of the presidential elections in Romania, but does not want to make any predictions. Peskov said then that Moscow is not familiar with the worldview of this candidate (Calin Georgescu) as far as relations with Russia are concerned.

Political analysts in Romania do not exclude the possibility of Russian interference in the elections in favor of Georgescu.
