The Member of the New York State Senate, Liz Kruger, proposed that the states of the northeastern United States, including New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, be considered seceding from the United States and their annexation to Canada, writes Newsweek.
Kruger, chairman of the New York State Senate Finance Committee, expressed concern that Donald Trump's return to power could threaten liberal states with cuts in federal funding because of their migrant sanctuary status. The Democratic senator claims that similar steps are already being discussed in the president-elect's administration.
This is not the first time Kruger has proposed such an idea. In an interview with City and State New York in September, she proposed uniting the northeastern states into a “southeast province of Canada”.
The senator's proposal sparked heated discussions on social networks, although experts consider it more of a symbolic expression of dissatisfaction with Trump's policies than a real initiative.
