Polish line of defensive fortifications "Eastern Shield" will be extended to the border with Ukraine. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. “Our actions will also refer to the protection of the border with Ukraine – for other reasons – but we want Poles to feel safe along the entire length of the eastern border”, Tusk said during a visit to the first section of fortifications on the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation in the village of Dombruvka.
Tusk announced a program to build a line of defensive fortifications on Poland's eastern borders in May. Then the prime minister mentioned plans to strengthen a 400-kilometer section along the borders with the Russian Federation and Belarus. Subsequently, the Polish authorities increased the estimated length of the fortification line to 800 km. There are plans to dig trenches, lay minefields, install anti-tank hedgehogs and create an active surveillance system.
The value of the project is estimated at 2.5 billion. USD. Work on the installation of the first section with concrete hedgehogs on the border with the Russian Federation began on November 1 and was completed by the end of the month.
