Romanian independent presidential candidate Calin Giorcescu told Radio Romania Actuatuc (Radio România Actualități) that he is proposing the introduction of a military service „of 3-6 months“ during which recruits would be trained in defence and emergency intervention measures, reports Digi 24 TV.

Asked what he thought about introducing compulsory military service, the far-right independent candidate Georgescu said he wanted to introduce a military service „of 3-6 months“ that would prepare young people, including for emergency interventions.

Jorgescu gave the example of flood cases when people do not know what to do.

According to his ideas, this type of military service should be paid at the rate of the average wage in the country. Georgescu says that after the program ends, the recruits will decide whether they want to continue serving in the military or stay only at the emergency training level. He said other countries have this type of military service and gave the example of Switzerland.

Calin Giurgescu surprisingly won the first round of Romania's presidential election on 24 November. Before that, he was little known to the Romanian public and opinion polls barely picked up his participation in the race. After his victory in the first round, the Romanian media began to investigate his personality and found contradictory information.

Giorgescu has been described as a far-right critic of NATO and the EU, an admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past, and now – of US President-elect Donald Trump for a second term.

The sixty-two-year-old Georgescu considers the leader of the fascist Legionnaires' Movement between the two world wars, Corneliu Zela Codreanu, and Marshal Ion Antonescu, responsible for the Holocaust in Romania, to be "heroes".

Romanian media have revealed that Giurgescu's entourage includes neo-Legionary leader Eugen Sequila, who was a member of the Foreign Legion and is now an organizer of paramilitary camps.

Poll Sekila has proposed in public speeches the introduction of military training since high school. Kalin Giurgescu's children have participated in such training, training and survival camps, as revealed by Kalin Giurgescu's wife, who some time ago did an interview with Eugen Sekila, in which the two talked about how life changed as a result of such training, Digi 24 informs.

The second round of the presidential election, which will feature Giurgescu and pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi, is scheduled for December 8.
