Amnesty International: Israel is committing genocide in Gaza - 1

Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. This is stated in a new report by the international non-governmental independent organization „Amnesty International“, reported SIR (Servizio Informazione Religiosa).

In the report, the human rights organization documents how, during the military offensive launched after the deadly attacks on October 7, Israel has unleashed with impunity hell and destruction against the Palestinian population of Gaza without limits, continuously and with full force.

Israel has committed prohibited acts with the specific intent to destroy the Palestinian population of Gaza. These acts include murder, serious physical and mental injury, and acts intended to physically destroy the population.

Israel has imposed living conditions in the Gaza Strip that have created a deadly mix of malnutrition, starvation and disease, exposing the Palestinian population to a slow and calculated death. Israel has also subjected Palestinian citizens in Gaza to incommunicado detention, ill-treatment and torture, Amnesty said.

Month after month, Israel has treated the Palestinian population of Gaza as an inhumane group, undeserving of human rights and dignity, demonstrating its intent to physically destroy them, said Amnesty Secretary-General Agnes Callamard. “Genocide is being committed. There is no doubt about it," Callamard said.

The 1948 Genocide Convention, adopted after the mass murder of Jews during the Holocaust, defines genocide as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: 1) killing members of the group; 2) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; 3) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; 4) imposing measures to prevent births within the group; 5) forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."

„The atrocities committed on October 7, 2023 by „Hamas“ and other Palestinian armed groups against Israeli citizens and other nationalities, which include deliberate mass killings and hostage-taking, can never justify Israel's genocide against the Palestinian population of Gaza,'' Callamard stressed.

International jurisprudence recognizes that for genocide to be committed, it is not necessary for the perpetrators to succeed in destroying, in whole or in part, a protected group. It is sufficient that they commit prohibited acts with the intent to destroy that group.
