Impeachment of the president requires the support of two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 out of a total of 300 deputies. The opposition parties control a total of 192 parliamentary seats. The rejection of martial law by parliament was passed unanimously on Wednesday with the support of 18 People's Party MPs who belong to an anti-Yun faction in the party.

If Yun's impeachment request is accepted, he will be temporarily removed from office until the Constitutional Court decides whether to remove him permanently or restore his presidential powers. Prime Minister Han Dok-su will take over the performance of his duties.
