South Korea's ruling party leader Han Dong- hu today said President Yoon Suk-yeol must be swiftly removed from power, revealing that Yoon ordered the arrests of prominent politicians during his martial law, which was quickly overturned by parliament, reported Yonhap, quoted by BTA.

The People's Party leader said the president is likely to take “radical action”, similar to the failed attempt to declare martial law, if Yun manages to stay in office.

“Given the newly revealed facts, I believe it is necessary to immediately terminate Yoon Suk-yeol's powers to protect the Republic of Korea and its people,”, Han said at an emergency meeting of the party leadership in the National Assembly.

He pointed out that it was confirmed last night that Yoon had ordered counterintelligence chief Yeo In-hyun to detain key political figures on the grounds that they were part of “anti-state forces” and had even mobilized intelligence forces to arrest them. hold.

Khan expressed deep concern that such “radical actions” could happen again if Yun continues to perform his functions as president, and this would expose the country to “great risk”.

Khan had previously said he would work to reject the impeachment request, although he criticized the declaration of martial law and called Yun's actions “unconstitutional”, the Associated Press noted.

Impeachment of the president requires the support of two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 out of a total of 300 deputies. The opposition parties control a total of 192 parliamentary seats. The rejection of martial law by parliament was passed unanimously on Wednesday with the support of 18 People's Party MPs who belong to an anti-Yun faction in the party.

If Yun's impeachment request is accepted, he will be temporarily removed from office until the Constitutional Court decides whether to remove him permanently or restore his presidential powers. Prime Minister Han Dok-su will take over the performance of his duties.
