Russia fully supports the peace initiative and prisoner exchange proposed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by "Reuters" and News.bg.
He specified that Orbán made the proposals during a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"During yesterday's telephone conversation with President Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made a proposal on the eve of Christmas to carry out a large exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine, as well as to declare a Christmas truce," explained Peskov.
Russia quickly sent its proposal for a prisoner-of-war exchange for Christmas to the Hungarian embassy, but Ukraine rejected all offers, he added.
From July 1, Hungary took over the presidency of the European Council for six months. Immediately afterwards, Orbán visited Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and the USA.
However, the European Union stressed that the Hungarian Prime Minister does not have the authority to represent the Union in its international contacts, despite Hungary's role as a temporary presiding country.
