China criticizes new US military aid to Taiwan

It is worth $571 million

China criticized new US military aid to Taiwan on Monday, saying the $571 million package seriously violated the "one China principle" and the provisions of joint communiques between China and the United States, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

China will take "all necessary measures" to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, a foreign ministry spokesman said in Beijing.

He called Taiwan a "red line that must not be crossed" in relations between China and the United States.

Beijing considers the democratically-ruled island of Taiwan its territory, a claim that the government in Taipei denies, Reuters notes.

US President Joe Biden approved the aid yesterday.

A White House statement said Biden had authorized the US Secretary of State “to request from the Department of Defense $571 million in military equipment and services, as well as military training and preparation to provide support to Taiwan“. The statement did not provide further details, Reuters points out.

Meanwhile, the US State Department has approved a potential sale to Taiwan of defense command, control, communications and computer modernization systems worth $265 million, the Pentagon said.
