Cairo to host trilateral summit between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus - 1

Cairo will host a key trilateral summit in early January, which will mark ten years of cooperation between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, reports Al Ahram. The forum will highlight the commitment of these Mediterranean countries to regional stability and partnership, BTA reports.

The meeting will be attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. Among the main topics of discussion will be initiatives in the field of energy and regional security, as well as opportunities to promote economic ties between the countries.

One of the main initiatives is the project to connect the electricity grids of Egypt and Greece, called GREGY. It aims to improve the integration between the energy networks of North Africa and Europe.

GREGI is one of five proposed interconnectors between Egypt and Europe. The interconnection will be implemented via an undersea cable across the Mediterranean Sea, connecting Wadi al-Natrun in Egypt to mainland Greece. The cable will be almost 1,500 kilometers long and will have a capacity of 3 gigawatts to transmit Egyptian-produced "green" energy.
