The Lebanese Foreign Minister expressed hope for “the best possible relations” with neighboring Syria during a phone call with his Syrian counterpart, amid long-standing tensions between Beirut and Damascus, Agence France-Presse and BTA reported.
“Lebanon hopes for the best neighborly relations with the new government of Syria“, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib said during his conversation with Assad Hassan al-Shibani today.
From the intervention of Syrian troops in Lebanon during the civil war (1975-1990) to that of the Lebanese group “Hezbollah“, which supported Bashar Assad's army in the conflict in Syria that began in 2011, relations between the two neighboring countries have always been marked by tension, AFP notes.
Meanwhile, an Iraqi delegation, including the head of intelligence, met today in Damascus with representatives of the new Syrian administration and discussed the situation in Syria, as well as the need for security and stability along the border between the two countries, the Iraqi state news agency reported.
