At least six people have died and six others are missing after a bus carrying about 30 passengers fell into a river in Peru yesterday, the country's health ministry said, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.

“Six people have died and six are missing after a bus veered off the road and overturned“, the health ministry for the western Ancash region said in a statement. “According to the latest data, 32 people were injured. As for the missing persons, the regional police service is currently searching for them,” the statement added.

There is no information yet on the cause of the accident.

The bus, which was traveling from the capital Lima to Pomabamba in the north of the country, fell 150 meters and ended up in a river.

The accident occurred in the Ancash region, about 430 kilometers northeast of the capital.

According to photos posted on social media, the vehicle split in two as it rolled down the slope.

Road accidents are common in Peru due to frequent speeding by drivers, the poor condition of the road infrastructure, and the lack of markings.
