Damascus airport to resume operations on January 7 - 1

Syria's Civil Aviation Authority said the country's main airport in Damascus will resume international flights from January 7, Reuters reported.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) also reported that international civil flights to and from Damascus will resume next week, after they were suspended when opposition forces seized the airport last month, BTA reports.

"We announce that we will start accepting international flights to and from Damascus International Airport from Tuesday," the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement, quoted by SANA. The agency notes that planes carrying international aid are already landing in Syria.

Earlier this week, Qatar Airways announced that it would resume flights to Damascus from Tuesday.

Domestic flights at Damascus airport resumed on December 18, ten days after then-President Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for more than two decades and was ousted on December 8, fled the country as rebels advanced on the Syrian capital.
