Pope Francis baptizes 21 babies in Sistine Chapel in traditional Vatican ceremony - 1

Pope Francis fulfilled the annual Vatican tradition by performing the sacrament of baptism of 21 babies in the Sistine Chapel, BTA reports.

Under the magnificent ceiling of the chapel, painted with frescoes by Michelangelo, the Pope marked the end of the Christmas holidays with this special ritual. The babies were from families of Vatican employees who work in the Holy See.

Pope Francis' message on the sacrament of baptism

The Pope emphasized the importance of children as key participants in the ceremony. "It is important that these children feel good," said the Holy Father, emphasizing that if the children are hungry or uncomfortably dressed, we must take care of them so that they can feel comfortable. He reminded that baptism is a sacrament of faith and prayer.

The symbolism of the candle and the message of faith

During the event, each family received a candle, symbolizing the light of Christ, which "never goes out". The Pope recommended that each family light a candle at home in times of difficulty, as a reminder to seek guidance from God.

The Ceremony and Its Significance in the Liturgical Calendar

This traditional infant baptism ceremony marks the feast of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and was established in 1981 by Pope John Paul II. The event continues to be an important moment for the Christian community and for the Vatican as a symbol of new beginnings and spiritual rebirth.
