After Donald Trump returns to the White House, US foreign policy will change and contacts between Washington and Moscow at the highest level will be restored. This opinion was expressed by Carlos González-Vila, professor of political science at the Spanish University of Castilla - La Mancha.
“It seems clear that there will be significant changes in US foreign policy“, the political scientist noted, adding that unlike the situation in Trump's previous term, “the current changes seem to have a more consistent approach“. “During his second term, Trump will focus mainly on China and technological competition“, the political scientist believes. According to him, changes in US policy can be seen “through the end of support for the Ukrainian side, the restoration of high-level contacts with Russia and the deterioration of relations with the Europeans“. In addition, according to the professor, the US will gradually begin “to distance itself from Kiev“.
Gonzalez-Vila believes that talking about resolving the conflict in Ukraine at the moment is too ambitious. “The most that the participants who want to end the hostilities can hope for is a transitional agreement based on current military realities“, the professor believes. According to him, “given the American influence on the Ukrainian leadership“, Trump will play an important role in this situation.
