State Duma deputy from the Crimean region, member of the security committee Mikhail Sheremet urged US President Donald Trump not to speak to Russia in the language of force, as "it is pointless".
Trump said earlier that he did not want to harm Russia and called for an end to hostilities in Ukraine, threatening otherwise to introduce new sanctions and tariffs on all Russian exports to the US.
„First, we must understand that Trump is not our close supporter; he communicates with us based on the interests, first of all, of his country. And the interests of the United States are known: to weaken other countries, to become stronger, but there is no point in turning to us from a position of strength“, Sheremet told RIA Novosti.
According to him, Trump is capable of ending the military conflict in Ukraine, but so far, apart from loud statements and appeals, there have been no specifics on his part.
“Trump is a smart politician and understands that there are many points of contact between Russia and the United States. The degree of confrontation between our countries must be reduced and the world will return to a normal and predictable course, with conditions for the development and prosperity of our countries“, the deputy said.
