At least 46 terrorists from "Islamic State" have been killed in US airstrikes on their targets in northern Somalia, DPA reported, quoted by BTA, citing a statement from local Somali authorities.
"Among them are twelve foreign fighters", said General Mohamed Ahmed, military spokesman for the semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland, where the strikes were carried out yesterday. "We believe they are mainly from Arab countries", he added.
DPA makes the reservation that the information cannot be independently confirmed.
US President Donald Trump wrote yesterday on the social platform "Ex" that he had issued the order for the airstrikes. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the actions of the US Africa Command were coordinated with the Somali government.
The caves where the "Islamic State" fighters were living were collapsed in the strike and many terrorists were killed, Trump wrote. He added that the message to the armed group was: "We will find you and we will kill you".
Islamist terrorists in Somalia are often targeted by US drone strikes, but these attacks are usually not publicized, DPA notes.
The authorities in Puntland announced an offensive against the Islamists in this mountainous region last month. Then there was talk of air support from the United Arab Emirates, the agency recalls.
Somalia has been fighting Islamist militants for years, who carry out terrorist attacks both in this country and in neighboring countries. In addition to the militants of the "Islamic State", terrorists from "Al-Shabab" also pose a significant threat to this country.
