Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke about buying Russian gas after 2014 at an event organized by the newspaper Die Zeit.
“It was not a mistake to receive cheap gas for a few more years. And then it was absolutely right to break energy relations with Russia“, she said
Merkel added that the US will no longer feel safe. According to her, Ukraine has also never opposed gas supplies from Russia to Europe, but wanted the transit to pass through its territory. In November last year, the German Ministry of Economics banned the operator of the LNG terminal Deutsche Energy Terminal from accepting supplies from Russia "until further notice" for “protection of fundamental public interests“.
"Gazprom" stopped sending gas via Ukraine from the morning of January 1, emphasizing that it had lost the technical and legal ability to deliver fuel via this route after the expiration of the transit agreement.
