A new strong earthquake of magnitude five on the Richter scale shook the islands of Santorini and Amorgos in the Aegean Sea this evening, after experts had earlier expressed cautious optimism that the intensity of the series of earthquakes in the area was decreasing, ANA-MPA reported, quoted by dariknews.bg.
The earthquake was registered last night at 9:05 PM. with an epicenter in the sea 21 km southwest of the village of Arkesini on Amorgos.
A little earlier, at 8:53 p.m., another significant earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 was registered in the same area.
Seismic activity continues near Santorini
In the area between Santorini and Amorgos, strong seismic activity has been observed in the last ten days, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency and the evacuation of most of the population of Santorini, which is located in an active volcanic complex. According to most experts, the seismic activity is not related to an upcoming volcanic eruption, but the possibility of a stronger earthquake of the magnitude of six is not excluded.
The strongest earthquake of the thousands of tremors from the "seismic swarm" was 5.2 on the Richter scale on Wednesday.
