George Simion can run for president - 1

The Constitutional Court of Romania has rejected a protest against the registration of the candidacy of the leader of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion. This is stated in the report of the Constitutional Court. Thus, the candidate for sovereignty will be able to run for the post of president of the country on May 4.

“Today a step was taken towards a return to democracy“, Simion wrote on Facebook. But I'm not done yet, the hardest part is just beginning.“

The deadline for registering candidates for the presidential elections in Romania, which will be held in the country on May 4 and 18 (with a second round if necessary), has passed.

After the Constitutional Court banned Calin Georgescu from participating in the presidential elections, the two parties supporting him, the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians and the Youth Party, developed a new election strategy. Their leaders George Simion and Ana Maria Gavrila said that they would submit documents for registering their candidacies and that once they are approved, one of them would withdraw from the campaign.

The Constitutional Court has so far allowed the single candidate of the pro-European party bloc "Romania, Forward!" to run in the elections. (Social Democratic Party, National Liberal Party and Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania) Crin Antonescu, the mayor of the capital, Nicăsor Dan, former Prime Minister Victor Pontu and the leader of the Union for the Salvation of Romania, Elena Lasconi. Gavrila is awaiting a decision on the registration of his candidacy by the Central Election Commission.

The final list of candidates for the highest state office in Romania, according to the electoral calendar, should be published on March 20.
