US President Donald Trump believes that it is possible to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin "at the right time" and is counting on phone conversations with him in the future.
"I think I will meet with Putin at the right time", Trump told reporters aboard his plane as he traveled to Louisiana. Asked whether he had phone conversations with Putin before or after his inauguration on January 20, 2025, Trump replied: "I have. Let's say I have." "And I expect a lot more talk," he added. Speaking about the conflict in Ukraine, Trump stressed: “We have to stop this. We have to stop this soon.”
But when asked how he would feel about the fact that many might get the impression that he regularly speaks to Putin on the phone, Trump replied: “They might think so. That makes sense. I don't want to talk about it. If we do, I don't want to tell you about the conversations too soon. But I think we're making progress."
The New York Post reported on Saturday that Trump discussed the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine with Putin by phone.
Russian President Dmitry Peskov's press secretary later saidthat he could neither confirm nor deny the reports of contacts between the Russian leader and the US president.
Putin's last official conversation with Trump was on July 23, 2020.
