The UK must respect President Donald Trump's "strong and clear mandate for change", the new UK ambassador to the US told the BBC, quoted by BNR, on his first day in his new role.
Lord Peter Mandelson said the UK did not have to agree with every detail of Trump's agenda, but added: "We have to respect and understand what his motives are, what his mandate is and how his allies have to adjust sometimes."
Mandelson, 71, one of the most prominent figures in British politics, spoke to the BBC shortly after presenting his credentials to the US State Department and becoming ambassador to Washington.
In the interview, he said his previous criticism of Trump had been "unwarranted and misguided" and had been directed at differences between the UK and the US over Middle East policy.
"We all want to grow our economies. I think what we need to do is build a technology and investment relationship between the US and the UK that is fit for the 21st century. That is what I want to focus on," said Peter Mandelson. According to him, Starmer and Trump share a "warm personal relationship", which should facilitate trade negotiations.
