Hundreds of people in Greenland protested today against US President Donald Trump's plans to conquer the Arctic territory, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
"Our country. Our choice. Our freedom", Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the center-right "Democrats" party, wrote on Facebook in response to photos from the demonstration in the capital Nuuk.
Earlier this week, Trump again reminded of his idea of joining Greenland to the US. He has been saying for months that he wants to take control of Greenland, which is part of Denmark.
At a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House on Thursday, the US president further fueled the issue when he answered a reporter's question about his plans for a possible annexation.
"I think it will happen," Trump said, emphasizing the island's great strategic importance and the fact that Denmark is very far from it.
Greenland MPs reacted with fury. It is a "completely unacceptable" approach, the current head of government, Mute Egede, told the Greenlandic newspaper "Sermitsiak" during a rally in Nuuk today.
People also took to the streets in other cities on the island.
