Opposition leader after attack: Something must change in Germany - 1

German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, who is a favorite to become the next chancellor, called for tighter security measures after a car plowed into a trade union rally in Munich, injuring at least 28 people, DPA reported.

“Everyone in our country must feel safe again. Something must change in Germany“, the leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) wrote on the social network “Ex“.

“The security of the people in Germany will be our top priority. "We will strictly monitor the observance of law and order," Merz added, looking ahead to the period after the parliamentary elections on February 23, in which his conservative bloc, which also includes the CDU's sister party in Bavaria, the Christian Social Union (CSU), is expected to emerge victorious.

Merz said his thoughts were with those injured in the suspected terrorist attack in the Bavarian capital and thanked the security forces for their quick response.
