A shipment of 2,000-pound (about 907 kg) MK-84 heavy bombs, the ban on which was lifted by US President Donald Trump in late January, has been delivered to Israel by sea and unloaded at the port of Ashdod, the Israeli Defense Ministry press service reported.
„A shipment of heavy bombs, recently approved by the US government, has been received and unloaded in Israel. A ship carrying MK-84 heavy munitions docked and was unloaded at the port of Ashdod. The ammunition was loaded onto dozens of trucks and transported to Israeli Air Force bases,“ the statement said.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that "the shipment of ammunition that arrived in Israel overnight, as decided by the Trump administration, represents a significant asset for the IAF and IDF and serves as further evidence of the strong alliance between Israel and the United States." He added that Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth "in a recent conversation, reaffirmed America's commitment to continue providing Israel with all the tools it needs to ensure its security". "I thank President Donald Trump and the US administration for their continued support for the State of Israel," added Katz, whose comments were released by the Israeli Defense Ministry's press service.
The department noted that the Defense Ministry "continues to purchase and transport ammunition for the Israel Defense Forces." "To date, more than 76,000 tons of military equipment have arrived in Israel through 678 air and 129 sea shipments. This is the largest air and sea bridge in Israel's history," the Jewish state's Defense Ministry added.
Axios reported in late January that 1,800 MK-84 bombs that had been stored in US warehouses would be loaded onto a ship and delivered to Israel. The previous US administration feared that the use of these weapons in the Gaza Strip could lead to significant civilian casualties, the portal notes.
