Friedrich Merz, the most likely next chancellor of Germany, has called for renewed national confidence and unity as he tries to promote the program of his center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party before the formation of a new government early next month, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
“Our goal is clear: Germany must become economically stronger, safer, fairer and modern“, Merz said in a video address on the occasion of Easter, released by the CDU.
Merz said that the coalition agreement between the CDU/CSU alliance and the Social Democrats was the result of intensified negotiations and a new sense of trust between the country's two main moderate parties.
“We are committed to investing in industry, providing tax breaks relief for small and medium-sized enterprises and to ensure reliable energy supplies. And we are making our country safer - both internally and externally," he said.
Merz said that the Easter message of hope and renewal was particularly relevant this year.
“After the days of darkness comes light“, he said, noting the challenges facing Germany in the economic, social and geopolitical spheres. “There is still reason for hope. It is up to us to build the future“, he added.
He stressed Germany's intention to take on more responsibility in Europe and on the world stage.
Germany, Merz said, addressing the country's citizens, needs more cooperation and less mistrust. “We can all contribute to creating a better atmosphere in our country – with trust, respect and the will to move forward together“, he said.
