An Israeli delegation has arrived in Cairo for talks on extending the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement by another 42 days, Reuters reported, citing two Egyptian security sources, News.bg reports.
However, Hamas opposes the extension and insists on a transition to the second phase of the agreement, as originally agreed. According to the sources, this phase includes measures to achieve a permanent end to the war.
Uncertainty over the future of the ceasefire
The first phase of the ceasefire is due to end on Saturday, but the warring parties have not yet specified what will happen if a new agreement is not reached by then. Negotiations continue with the mediation of Egypt and Qatar and the support of the United States.
Hamas today called on the international community to pressure Israel to immediately move to the second phase, without further delay.
Israel insists on new conditions
Two Israeli government officials revealed that Israel is proposing an extension of the initial phase of the ceasefire, in which Hamas would release three hostages each week in exchange for Palestinians held by Israel.
