"I am terribly sorry, but who will protect Greenland? Probably refugees from Ukraine who came to Denmark?". This is how the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova commented on the news that Denmark is ready to send its troops to Ukraine.

Earlier, it was reported about Copenhagen's intention to participate in a peacekeeping mission after the conclusion of a peace agreement. The news was announced personally by the country's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen in an interview with DR.

“We have stated that Denmark is in principle ready to participate in the deployment of peacekeeping forces if the conditions are right“, he said.

At the same time, the minister noted that there are still no real plans for the proposed deployment of peacekeeping forces.

Proposals to send Western troops to Ukraine began to appear in February 2024. At the time, French President Emmanuel Macron said that there was no consensus in Europe on the need to send troops to Ukraine, but did not rule out the deployment of troops in the future. Western countries rejected the proposal, but then began discussions about deploying an EU peacekeeping contingent after a peace agreement was reached.

In February, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that London was ready to send its troops to Ukraine to provide security guarantees and help resolve the conflict. According to him, it was "not easy" for them to make such a decision.

On February 17, The Washington Post, citing its sources, wrote that European countries were considering the possibility of sending 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers to Ukraine.
