Today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had called on Kiev's Western allies to express a "clear position" on security guarantees. This includes the possibility of deploying a foreign military contingent on Ukrainian territory with US support, Reuters reported, BTA reports.
Zelensky's statement followed a virtual meeting with more than 25 leaders organized by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
After the meeting, Starmer expressed confidence that the so-called a coalition of the willing will ensure Ukraine's security "on land, at sea and in the sky", in the event of a future peace agreement with Russia.
Zelensky stressed on the social network „Ex“ that work must continue on building the contingents that will form the basis of Europe's future armed forces.
„Peace will be more reliable with European contingents on the ground and US support“, the Ukrainian president added.
Keir Starmer also expressed support for the introduction of an American security safeguard mechanism to guarantee lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelensky called on European leaders to overcome Russian President Vladimir Putin's opposition to the deployment of European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. He accused Putin of undermining peace efforts, saying: "The ceasefire could have happened by now, but Russia is doing everything it can to prevent it".
