Ukraine can achieve a just and lasting peace under the leadership of US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said on Friday, shortly before an expected phone call between US President Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Sybiga said that Kiev was not an obstacle to a peace deal with Russia. But the minister added that Ukraine was waiting for some clarity on the peace process after the conversation between Trump and Putin.
Kiev's top diplomat also said that Russia should accept a ceasefire without setting conditions, Agence France-Presse reported.
"Ukraine supported the US proposal for a temporary ceasefire for 30 days. "We expect Russia to accept this proposal unconditionally," Sibiga said. "It is time for Russia to show whether it really wants peace," he added.
The Kremlin confirmed that Russian and US presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will hold a telephone conversation today, Reuters reported. The conversation will take place between 13:00 and 15:00 GMT (between 15:00 and 17:00 Bulgarian time). There is "some understanding" with the US, but there are also a large number of issues to discuss and the two leaders will talk for as long as they deem necessary, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
