White House National Security Adviser Mike Walz said on Monday he had spoken with a Russian official about efforts to end the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
“We have agreed that our technical teams will meet in Riyadh in the coming days to focus on implementing and expanding the partial ceasefire that President (Donald) Trump negotiated with Russia“, Walz wrote in “Ex“.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff said he expects a full ceasefire in Ukraine within two weeks, adding that talks with Russia on the issue will take place in Saudi Arabia early next week, Agence France-Presse reported.
In In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Witkoff welcomed yesterday's conversation between US and Russian presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, during which they agreed to work towards a ceasefire under certain conditions.
„A full ceasefire will be agreed upon in the coming days. "I think we will achieve it within two weeks," the envoy added.
After the conversation between the two presidents, Russia said it had agreed to stop strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days.
Talks between Washington and Moscow involving technical teams on a full ceasefire are due to take place as early as Monday or Tuesday in Saudi Arabia, Witkoff said.
Kiev has not yet said whether or not it will accept the ceasefire, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to hold talks with Donald Trump today.
Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of not wanting to resolve the conflict after a night marked by Russian strikes on Ukraine and Kiev's attack on an oil depot on Russian territory.
